anything that marks time
with such a definite ending and beginning,
the way a new school year does,
fills me with unbridled optimism.
i love this time of year.
i love the jam-packed shelves
of back-to-school supplies
and the way walking up and down aisles
makes me feel like a kid in the candy store.
i love filling my cart with notebooks,
markers, folders, and brightly-colored gadgets
that promise instant, easy, self-organization.
i love back-to-school,
even though i’m not a student,
for the same reasons i love new year’s,
my birthday, spring, and a new notebook.
each of these, in their own unique way,
hold infinite possibilities as to the ways
i might fill the blank pages
with new chapters of my story.
i love the anything-is-possible feeling
that wells up inside of me
when it’s time to change the calendar
from one month to the next.
looking ahead to
those unwritten days
makes it seem like all the to-do’s on my list
have a really good chance of getting done.
i love the way
the start of something new,
be it a week,
or a year,
makes time feel manageable
and dreams doable.
i love the way new beginnings,
even the little ones,
help me reset my expectations,
thoughts and attitudes.
whether you’re sending your kids back to school,
or heading back there yourself…
whether you’re excited or nervous,
or simply addicted to colorful markers
and cool paper, the way i am…
happy back-to-school days.
