life's busy and days
sometimes slip away
leaving emails
and phone calls
unreturned,
and thoughts
and wishes unspoken.
what i love about mother's day
is the chance to celebrate
the special connections
in our lives
with words that speak to
the heartfelt wishes
we hold for each other's happiness.

one day,
my son and stepson
came inside and asked
if they could have
ten dollars.
they were young at the time,
in third or fourth grade,
and had found something at a garage sale
they thought i would like.
a little while later,
i looked out the window
and saw the boys
walking down the street
pulling this typewriter
in their wagon.
it was the best ten dollars
i ever spent.
the typewriter
sits on a table
in the living room
of my place in florida.
i feel happy
whenever i look at it,
which is why i include it
in cadence photos
whenever i have the chance.
