i saw this little boy
on the beach.
i asked if he had found
any shark teeth.
he shook his head and said no.
i held out my ziplock baggie
which held a handful of teeth.
i told him that he could have them.
his eyes grew big
with excitement.
he said thank you
and ran to show his mom.
as he was running away
with the baggie in his hand,
he turned, looked back,
and yelled,
"very thank you!"
i laughed
and thought of david
at that age.
and wished,
for a moment,
that he could be
little again.
i wondered,
the way parents
of sons do,
why boys can't stay
six and sweet forever,
or at least a little bit longer.
