i've always
been close
to my grandparents.
of all the memories
from my childhood,
it's the ones
of family times
at their houses
that shine brightest
in my mind.
my maternal grandmother
and paternal grandfather
are no longer here,
but because of all the good memories,
it feels like they're still close by.
grandpa kolz when he was a little boy
here's
one of my favorite
grandpa stories...
at a family picnic,
david,
then around ten,
sat very still,
very quietly,
for a very long time,
fishing.
my grandpa looked at me,
tilted his head in the direction
of david sitting across the pond
and said,
i've never seen david so quiet.
and then,
after a brief pause,
maybe you should get a pond.
nobody smiled bigger at one of grandpa's jokes
than grandpa.
***
my grandma and aunt when they were little girls
what comes to mind
first and foremost
when i think of my grandma
is the way i always felt
like i could talk to her,
even when i was a teenager
and didn't really
want to talk to anybody.
***
it's not lost on me
how lucky i am
to be this age
and still have
two healthy grandparents.
whenever i'm at one of their homes,
a part of me feels like i'm seven again,
and i love that.
i also love
this chance to know each of them
in ways i didn't when
i was a child.
my perspective
as an adult
has helped me appreciate them
in ways i couldn't have
back then.
***
grandma kolz when she was a little girl
my grandma and i share
a love of reading,
and similar tastes in books.
whenever she tells me
i'll like a certain author,
i almost always do.
i feel closer to her
after reading
a book she has recommended.
there's something
about that shared experience
that strengthens our connection.
***
my grandpa
is one of my biggest fans,
and i'll never forget
what he said
as he was looking at a photograph
i took of a tree.
amy, some people look at a tree
and see a tree.
you see art.
***
i'm also thinking
about my parents today
and everything
they've done
and are still doing
for my son
and my nieces.
thanks, mom and dad.
happy grandparents day
